Always a fun event, the NYC Horror Fest will be returning for its 11th year this November. As usual it boasts a diverse selection of horror features, all of which are accompanied by short films.
Things will kick off with a gala premiere of Return to Nuke'em High Vol. 1, Troma's latest in-house production. Troma head Lloyd Kaufman will be in attendance to accept a Lifetime achievement award at the screening and hopefully yell some words about mega-conglomerates. The fest will continue with many other NYC and East Coast premieres of films like Mischief Night, The Banshee Chapter, Contracted (which IFC just picked up), Viscera, The Bates Haunting, and Captured Hearts, which may have the nuttiest cast of the entire lineup, with Lobert Loggia, Tony Todd, Dustin Diamond, and Charles Durning starring as Santa Claus. Wow.
Personally the film I'm most excited to see is Play Dead, the film version of Teller and Todd Robbins' Off-Broadway play which ran in NYC for a long time but I stupidly never managed to make it over to. It looks amazing.
After the tragic passing of festival director Michael J. Hein in 2011 the programming is being handled by Tony Timpone (of Fangoria fame) and Ronnie Hein, Michael's mother. Stuart Gordon will be given the new Michael J. Hein Award for Personal Achievement in Direction at the festival.
The New York City Horror Film Festival is being held at Tribeca Cinemas from November 14-17th. Check nychorrorfest.com for the full lineup and to purchase tickets, and expect reviews to follow!
