Lars von Trier's Nymp()maniac, a five and a half hour sex epic, will be the first time the filmmaker has ever given up final cut. The version that will be released in his home country of Denmark will be trimmed to four hours, and it will be presented as two movies.
interestingly the trims aren't for censorship; the film will still feature hardcore sex. The trims are entirely about selling the movie; I guess people are more willing to sit through two two hour movies than one five hour movie.
“The short version is against Lars’ own will, but he accepts it because he understands market mechanisms,” says producer Peter Aalbaek Jensen. “You cannot make a film for more than 60 million kroners (about $11 million) that is so lengthy. Five and a half hour is so extreme that it reduces market value so radically that investors would have felt they had bought a pig in a poke."
Magnolia is releasing the movie in the US... but which version? If the full version won't play in Copenhagen, will it play in Peoria*? I'm already assuming Magnolia is going to blur the hardcore sex (their bread and butter is VOD, and a lot of platforms simply won't take the hardcore version. This is why the American cut of Holy Motors has a blurred penis in it), but will they also release the two-parter version? I won't pretend that a five and a half hour movie about a nymphomaniac's life from 5 to 50 doesn't sound extreme, but I'm always interested in what Lars von Trier does, and I'd always prefer to see his vision. I'm sure there will eventually be some way to see the full version, so I'm not crazy concerned about it.
* Just kidding, I doubt LvT movies play in Peoria. Will it play in Manhattan is the better question.
