The badass lady answer to THE EXPENDABLES has a director. (He's a dude, obviously.)

I first heard about The Expendabelles at Forever Fest, during the YA Book panel. YA author Kirsten Smith, screenwriter (along with her writing partner Karen McCullah) of 10 Things I Hate About You, Legally Blonde, She's the Man and more told us that she was writing the script for an "all-woman version of The Expendables." I love Kirsten Smith, and I'm happy to hear that this idea, while kind of silly, is coming to fruition. Today Deadline announced that Smith and McCullah have indeed written the screenplay for The Expendabelles, and it will be directed by Legally Blonde director Robert Luketic.

It's nice to see Smith, McCullah and Luketic reunited, because I think they did some clever, surprising work on Legally Blonde. Of course, I would have loved to see this film directed by a woman, but this is the world we live in, and in this world women are very rarely tapped to direct high-profile action films, even those starring other women. Maybe one day that world will change, but that day is not today. But hey, we've got two great women writing the thing, and we'll have a bunch of great women starring in it, and that is something. (Sly is producing, by the way.)

Here's the summary:

When America’s Navy SEALs are wiped out trying to penetrate the island lair of a deadly despot who has captured one of the world’s top nuclear scientists, it becomes clear that there is no such thing as the right man for the job and that this is a mission so impossible that only women can handle it. The only way in: some of the world’s deadliest female operatives must pose as high-class call-girls shipped in by private plane to satisfy a dictator–and instead save the scientist and the day.

GUYS, THAT IS SILLY. High-class call girls? Jeez louise. At least legitimately funny people wrote it, so I'm keeping my hopes up that the jokes will land.

So who's going to be in it? Executive producer Avi Lerner said in an interview last fall that he was in talks with Meryl Streep, Cameron Diaz and Milla Jovovich. I will literally eat my hat if Meryl Streep joins this cast. Who would I like to see? Any of those names, along with Gabrielle Union, Michelle Yeoh, Pam Grier, Linda Hamilton...okay, I'm about to spiral. There are a lot of names, okay? Drop yours below.
