I believe that if you randomly see the cover of a book 1,000,000 times in one lifetime, you no longer have to read that book. With The Giver, I might be right on the line. But I'll still see the movie, I guess.
Having watched the trailer, I still have no idea what's really going on here, which seems to be a pattern. I was really down on YA dystopias yesterday because I watched Divergent. Today I rewatched Catching Fire, however, so I'm in a better mood on the subject. Still, this may be a slightly more classic piece of YA literature, but as a movie it looks like the same old stuff.
It does have Meryl Streep though, and the giant bearded tongue Jeff Bridges turned into at some point during True Grit. He doesn't look that much like the bearded guy on the book cover, but it's Jeff Bridges so maybe that's close enough. Hopefully he's subtitled in the finished film.
Directed by Phillip Noyce, The Giver comes out August 15.
