You can kind of guess The Drop was written by Dennis Lehane before this trailer even tells you. As far as I can tell, there are no child abductions in the film, but it oozes that gritty working class crime drama stuff he excels at. It also sort of looks reminiscent of The Town and Killing Them Softly, both of which I like a lot. (BAD readers might also be happy to learn the film was directed by Bullhead's Michaël Roskam.)
And while the story look interesting, The Drop's big draw is not the plot but the cast. Tom Hardy is always great, but matching him with James Gandolfini feels like a stroke of genius. I mean this with all the respect in the world, but watching them interact with each other is like seeing a movie with dueling Marlon Brandos.
According to IMDB, The Drop comes out September 19. I have a good feeling the cute puppy will make it to the end of the film unhurt.
That last part was an April Fools' Day joke.
