I really like the trailer for Book of Life, a romantic adventure based on the Mexican holiday Día de Muertos, or Day of the Dead, a day for remembrances of loved ones who have passed away that takes place from October 31-November 2 each year. I've always found the art behind the Day of the Dead to be incredibly gorgeous, and the Jorge Gutierrez-directed passion project produced by Guillermo del Toro is as vividly colorful as any ofrenda.
The voice cast is great: Diego Luna is Manolo, a young man willing to risk anything to win Zoe Saldana's Maria, who is also being wooed by a goofy lady's man named Joaquin, voiced by Channing Tatum. Danny Trejo, Ron Perlman, Christina Applegate, Ice Cube, Cheech Marin and Hector Elizondo all co-star.
Día de Muertos is a fascinating, beautiful festival, and I love that kids are going to learn about it through a fun animated adventure. Gutierrez has been working on the project for over fourteen years, and it was originally optioned by DreamWorks before a separation due to creative differences. It's a happy circumstance that del Toro stepped in to make Gutierrez's longtime dream a reality.
