I've never watched Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. because I'm more of a DC TV kinda gal (*ducks as a beer bottle whizzes by*), but that show has just ensured my viewership: the absolutely wonderful Kyle MacLachlan is headed to season two! I've watched worse television for this precise reason (Desperate Housewives, latter seasons of Sex and the City, the impossibly lame legal drama In Justice), so I don't see lukewarm reviews of S.H.I.E.L.D deterring me.
His role is evidently something of a spoiler, so read at your own risk (from TVLine):
Specifically, TVLine has learned that the journeyman actor will recur during Season 2 as a character best described as… Skye’s father.
The question of Skye’s parentage — including who her mom and dad are, how she ended up at an orphanage and why she is classified as an 0-8-4 — loomed large during the ABC series’ freshman run. The season finale closed with Centipede’s Raina approaching a mysterious figure, presenting a photo of Skye and saying, 'I found your daughter.'
BUT WILL HE EAT PIE. Will he drink coffee with the kind of enthusiasm usually reserved for orgasms and personal triumph over lifelong adversity? Will he be winningly optimistic and unerringly intuitive? Will he be shirtless? These are the questions that keep me up at night.
