Ben Wheatley makes movies that get under my skin. Even when non-horrible things are going down in his films, I still feel the ugly, almost uncomfortable sense of dread of living in a generally unsafe world. So the idea of him making an all-out action film gives me a lot to anticipate.
Variety reports that Ben Wheatley will direct Free Fire, a $10 million US production (Wheatley’s first) starring bigwigs like Luke Evans, Armie Hammer, Cillian Murphy, Olivia Wilde, and - of course - Michael Smiley. Apparently the plot revolves around a big arms deal that goes belly up and leads to a massive shoot out. Like, that’s it.
Here’s Wheatley’s take on what he intends to make:
’Free Fire’ will take you and stick you in the middle of the action. I want the film to have the stylish, no-nonsense feel that you get in Peckinpah’s ‘The Getaway.’ It’s a modern ‘70s movie. Muscular, tough and spare.
Those are magic words, and I can’t wait to see it. Speaking of movies I can’t wait to see, Wheatley’s High-rise, which stars Tom Hiddleston, Jeremy Irons, and (here he is again) Luke Evans is currently in post production. I’m reading the book right now, and seriously need to see the adaptation as soon as possible.
