Alexander Payne’s next film will probably deal with the same themes you find in most Alexander Payne films, and I’m sure there will be at least one or two dumb redneck caricatures thrown around, but in all other respects it sounds very different. For one - well, for all, actually - it’s a science fiction film.
Downsizing is all about a guy who says “Fuck it. I think I might have a better time if I shrink myself.” So he shrinks himself. It’s a satire. Payne has been talking about making it for a while. In 2009 it was supposed to feature Paul Giamatti, Reese Witherspoon, and Sacha Baron Cohen.
And now, according to Deadline, we learn that Matt Damon will be playing this shrinker stinker. This is good news if you want to see Matt Damon as a really little fella but bad news if you want to see Matt Damon in Zhang Yimou’s The Great Wall, as this casting will keep him from participating in that film as intended. Poor Zhang Yimou.
Hopefully everything goes well for Downsizing as it develops because this sounds like an Alexander Payne movie I can really get behind. I’m also fond of the idea that we’re going to have two different movies coming up about guys who can shrink themselves. Every man's dream!
