Everybody Freak Out: Doctor Doom Is Getting Changed For The Movies
Why is Fox being so secretive about their new Fantastic Four? Maybe it's because they know everybody is going to freak out when they find out what changes have been made to the characters and story. Changes like the new name and origin for Doctor Doom, as explained by Toby Kebbel, who plays him.
Talking to Collider Kebbel said:
“He’s Victor Domashev, not Victor Von Doom in our story. And I’m sure I’ll be sent to jail for telling you that. The Doom in ours—I’m a programmer. Very anti-social programmer. And on blogging sites I’m 'Doom.'"
Well this is a mixed bag for sure. I hate the new name. It's pointless and it indicates a basic lack of comfort with the characters, the story and the genre. This is a bad sign.
The rest of it? I can take it or leave it. After X-Men I thought for sure all superheroes would get their code names from their IM names. It just sort of makes sense. The blogging/programmer stuff? I'm ok with that too, especially as it seems like Fantastic Four is using the origin from Ultimate Fantastic Four, where Doom is a student in the Baxter Building gifted school or whatever it's called. Sure, why wouldn't he be a programmer? I actually like that because it ties into magic - as a programmer Doom could be looking for the source code of the universe itself.
But I bet there's no magic in this Doctor Doom (and I bet he doesn't even have a PhD), because Kebbel repeats the party line that this film will be very realistic, which is just what we want from a movie about a guy who stretches and his friends.
