In honor of Dumb and Dumber To, currently cleaning up at the box office, this week Our Daily Trailer is celebrating idiots. Morons. Jackasses, dummies, doofs.
And there are no idiots I'd rather celebrate than Mira Sorvino's Romy White and Lisa Kudrow's Michele Weinberger. In 1997, David Mirkin directed Robin Schiff's script from her own play, and Romy and Michele's High School Reunion sort of came out of nowhere and delighted the shit out of every discerning human who saw it.
I have a theory about this. A few years ago, I wrote a post about the emergence of the "womanchild." In 2011, a trio of films came out featuring irresponsible, selfish, emotionally stunted women as their lead characters, with Bridesmaids, Bad Teacher and Young Adult all being released within six months of each other. And we started seeing this character more and more: Liz Lemon and Jessica Day and Hannah Horvath and the absolutely perfect assholes of Broad City have made it clear that women can be idiots too, and that is excellent.
But in 1997, those women among us who don't have all of our shit together - who can be selfish and irresponsible and fear commitment and dread accountability - had nowhere to turn. And then we met Romy and Michele. These jackasses are THE BEST. They eat nothing but candy corn and drink nothing but Diet Coke and booze. All they want to do is dress up and party and hang out and have fun and watch Pretty Woman. They love to dance so, so much. They're idiots, and they're wonderful, and I love them.
I think Idiots Week is going to end up being about a lot of dudes, because dudes make really good idiots. But women make really good idiots too, and we have Sorvino, Kudrow and Schiff to thank for teaching us that seventeen years ago.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go. I cut my foot before and my shoe is filling up with blood.
