Indie Spirit Noms Reveal How Great 2014 Was For The Movies
How good was 2014 for smaller budget films? So good that I would be happy seeing almost all of the films nominated for Best Picture at the Indie Spirit Awards win. Even Birdman, of which I'm not fan, makes a strong case for itself in terms of craft and skill.
Remember that the Indie Spirit Awards only go to films that cost less then $20 million and were financed and produced in the United States. With that in mind, what a line-up of films. The five Best Feature noms are an exciting spread of styles and subjects. David Zellner sneaks into Directing with the delightful Kumiko The Treasure Hunter. Three of the five Best First Feature nominees are women (and the films are all really good). Inherent Vice (which I have to imagine cost more than $20 million) gets a special award for being awesome. Nightcrawler is heavily recognized. I like seeing It Felt Like Love and Force Majeure and Ida in there. I'm rooting for Selma to take it in many major categories.
All in all I'm happy with these nominations, although this was such a great year I feel like it only scratches the surface. Reese Witherspoon certainly deserved some attention for Wild, and I'm surprised that Foxcatcher was completely left in the cold in the actual categories (it's getting a special recognition). The big question is how much this year's Indie Spirits will resemble the Oscars; in recent years the two have been pretty similar, with 12 Years A Slave winning both last year. I think Selma has a better than average chance of repeating that this year.
Here's the full list. What do you think?
