CBS’ SUPERGIRL Has Its Supergal

WHIPLASH and GLEE's Melissa Benoist has been cast as Kara Zor-El.

Melissa Benoist - evidently of Glee's fourth and fifth seasons, and most recently of Whiplash - has been cast as the lead in Supergirl, Greg Berlanti's CBS superhero drama (the first superhero show on CBS since 1990's The Flash!).

I like this! Benoist was really great in her small but important role in Whiplash - she absolutely killed in the scene pictured above, as she realizes what a complete ass Miles Teller's Andrew truly is. Greg Berlanti is currently producing some very successful superhero television with The Flash and Arrow, and I'm so excited to see what he does with Supergirl

Here's the show's official description:

Born on the planet Krypton, Kara Zor-El escaped amid its destruction years ago. Since arriving on Earth, she’s been hiding the powers she shares with her famous cousin. But now at age 24, she decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be.

Pretty cool, right? But here's what CBS entertainment chairman Nina Tassler said at a recent TCA event:

The beauty of it is now with shows like Good Wife and Madam Secretary, you can have serialized story elements woven into a case of the week. She’s a crime solver, so she’s going to have to solve a crime. She’s going to get a bad guy.

Oh, CBS. You just can't help yourself with your crime procedurals, can you? Still, I'm thrilled to see a female superhero leading her own series, and I think Benoist is terrific casting.
