Jon Stewart To Leave THE DAILY SHOW

The end of an era, for sure.

It had to happen, especially after watching all his pals move on, and especially especially after making his debut feature film, Rosewater: Jon Stewart is leaving The Daily Show, a job he’s had for almost 100 years.

I don’t know how many of you still watch the program, but I’m assuming the number is pretty high. After taking over for the smarmy Craig Kilborn, Stewart turned The Daily Show into a valuable mecca for people who didn’t want to get their news from actual news programs. I don’t mean that in a snide way, either. Sure, some found regular news boring, but a great number of us also defected toward comedy-only news simply due to cynicism or lack of trust. To this day, The Daily Show feels like a rare bullshit free entity willing to discuss the matters of the hour. And it’s also very funny.

Whoever replaces Jon Stewart will have a hard job maintaining that integrity. All the obvious names are now committed to shows of their own, so it’ll be interesting to see who they get. I’m hoping for the Iron Sheik.
