Now is a good time for a Flash Gordon redo. We just had a huge movie with a talking raccoon and a sentient tree, so people aren’t as against goofy concepts as Hollywood once feared. Why not go all the way with it?
And no one goes all the way quite like Matthew Vaughn. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Vaughn is in negotiations to direct a Flash Gordon movie. Producers John Davis and George Nolfi are producing the film from a script written by J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay. Those names probably don’t mean much to you, but the idea of Matthew Vaughn directing Flash Gordon is pretty exciting regardless of who wrote or produced the film.
Now we all get to speculate what kind of Flash Gordon movie Vaughn might deliver. It’s hard to imagine Fox letting him make the kind of gloriously R-rated films he excels at. But that’s okay. He does well with PG-13 projects as well. They’re just not as cool. Either way, if this goes through, Flash Gordon should definitely jump high onto a lot of people’s must-see lists.
