Telltale Games have the licensed game market pretty well sewn up. Here is a list of some of the licenses they've made or are making games with:
- Jurassic Park
- Back to the Future
- Monkey Island
- The Walking Dead
- Game of Thrones
That's an insane list. And even better, many of these games are really good. Telltale have admittedly settled into a somewhat comfortable niche mechanically, but the writing in their games is pretty much second to none, often even improving upon the source material they draw from. If you haven't played The Walking Dead, in particular, make it your mission to do so, because it's the best version of that franchise out there. These folks make great games, and they're on such a hot streak it's hard to see them faltering in the near future.
Their streak is especially hot now that they've struck a deal with fucking Marvel. There's no information on what their game will be - just that it will be a partnership between Marvel and Telltale and that it will release in 2017 - but the mere existence of the deal should be enough to excite even the most casual fan of either company's output.
It's gonna be hard for Telltale to top this coup, from a purely business/licensing point of view. I'd be shocked if there haven't been talks around licensing Star Wars, but that's an obvious choice. What Marvel stories would you like to see Telltale tackle? What property could they possibly tackle next? Me, I'm prepping the papers to license my debut feature Ghost Shark 2: Urban Jaws to them.
