David Ayer dropped our first look at Jared Leto as The Joker on Instagram, choosing today because we're hitting the 75th anniversary of the character's debut. This new Joker is for Suicide Squad, but don't be surprised if Leto makes a cameo in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice* thanks to the magic of additional photography.
What do you think of this look? It's certainly a new take on the character. It's unique.
I'm not wild about it, to be honest. There's an elegance to the best iterations of The Joker that you just don't get with "Damaged" tattooed on his forehead. And the other tats... they look like what a fan would draw on a picture of The Joker, as opposed to what he would organically have done to him. The endless "HAHAHAHA"s are especialy kind of crummy and feel like a meta shout out to the comics as opposed to a character thing. The font is familiar - it's not from Killing Joke... maybe Morrison's Arkham Asylum? Someone geekier than me find out exactly where that font comes from.
Then there is the grill. He looks more like James Franco in Spring Breakers than The Joker. I'm kind of wondering what he'll sound like. Is he going to be doing all white boy hip hop slang? That could be delightfully excruciating.
And of course Leto is doing a Killing Joke pose because that's the only Joker story we talk about anymore.
Maybe it'll work in action, but as of now I feel ilke Heath Ledger's legacy is secure.
