The first trailer for Ridley Scott's The Martian just popped up online and...well, what I saw of it looked good! I stopped about halfway through, as it seemed to be giving way too much away, but I say that having not yet read the Andy Weir novel on which the film is based; for all I know, this is all first and second act stuff. Maybe someone who's read the book can watch the clip below and let us know just how spoilery all of this is:
I was sold by the 1:40 mark, so that's where I left it paused. Here are a few random thoughts based on what I did see:
- Scott lined up a murderer's row for this movie: Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Kristen Wiig (!), Donald Glover (!!!), Jeff Daniels, Michael Peña, Sean Bean, and more are onboard. Wow.
- 20th Century Fox is calling this the film's "first official trailer," but I doubt this is the clip that'll run in theaters. For one thing, at 3:17, it's nearly a full minute longer than the average trailer. For another, Matt Damon drops an S-bomb (a very funny S-bomb, I might add) around the 1:30 mark.
- Ridley Scott's astronauts always look cooler than anyone else's astronauts. Discuss.
The Martian opens November 25th. Hopefully there are no other space movies coming out around that time that might jeopardize its chances at the box office.
