It's 1990, and the more evangelical regions of our nation have been in the throes of Satanic Panic for years. This is the setting of Alejandro Amenábar's Regression, in which detective Bruce Kenner (Ethan Hawke) investigates the claims of a young woman (Emma Watson) that her father sexually abused her - claims that her father supports without memory. The full trailer is out today, and it's done nothing to reduce my anticipation for this movie:
Minnesota, 1990. Detective Bruce Kenner (Ethan Hawke) investigates the case of young Angela (Emma Watson), who accuses her father, John Gray (David Dencik), of an unspeakable crime. When John unexpectedly and without recollection admits guilt, renowned psychologist Dr. Raines (David Thewlis) is brought in to help him relive his memories and what they discover unmasks a horrifying nationwide mystery.
Yes!! This is a movie I want. I want it right now. I want to watch Lupin hypnotize Hermione's dad, and I want there to be a hint of Satanic mystery surrounding the proceedings, and I want it all to be directed by the man behind The Others, Open Your Eyes and Thesis. I accept this gift gladly.
Regression hits theaters August 28.
