I liked almost nothing from Terminator Genisys, but I did enjoy JK Simmons' role as a cop. No, he isn't playing a hardass or a blustery captain, he's playing a broken down old cop with a drinking problem and an obsession with time traveling robots. He's one of the cops that is after Kyle Reese at the very beginning of the movie (in the department store where Reese gets clothes. You'll remember the scene from The Terminator, and it's repeated here with some major changes) and he sees firsthand the fact that killer robots have come from the future. He spends the next thirty years freaking out about this, marginalizing himself until Reese and Sarah Connor time travel (for no good reason) to 2017, where he gets emrboiled in the action.
Slashfilm interviewed Simmons and the actor revealed that he's locked in for more films in what has been pitched as a trilogy*.
“I am signed on, so if there are sequels I will by God be there," Simmons told the site. As to what his character might do in future films?
“There are a lot of ways we could go with O’Brien and we’ve actually have had those discussions already, so I do know where it goes — but thats part of the fun of the character, he’s the only guy in 2017, in the regular world, that has a clue whats going on. Nobody believes him, but he does sorta know whats up, or is beginning to figure out what the whole story is here. So I think if we make the sequels as they continue, I think O’Brien’s credibility level will develop.”
I liked Simmons, and he was the only comedic relief that worked in the movie (which is loaded with bad comedy), but I'm really hoping that there are no sequels. I'm really hoping Terminator goes away for a while.
* note: this is the third time someone has tried to start a new Terminator trilogy.
