I saw Goodnight Mommy out of Stanley Film Festival (read my review here), over three months ago, and this trailer just threw me back into the fear and discomfort I felt as if I'd only seen it this morning. What a perfect representation of a near-indescribable film.
Austrian directors Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz have created an almost impossibly strained exercise, excruciating in its build-up and brutal in its release. If that doesn't sound like something you want to see - well, it is, because Goodnight Mommy is also a beautiful master craft of a film, lovely to look at and keenly felt. It's terrifying and brilliant, easily one of the best horror films of the past few years. YOU MUST SEE IT. It comes out in a limited US release on August 15, so be on the lookout - and try not to read too much about it beforehand. Goodnight Mommy deserves your surprise.
