Ice Cube And Son Want To Make An LA Riots Thriller

The O'Sheas will get together again after STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON.

O'Shea Jackson Jr is one of the highlights of Straight Outta Compton, really capturing the spirit of his dad, Ice Cube. Now Lionsgate wants to cash in on that by casting the two together in a movie with the title April 29, 1992. If you know your history you know that's the date of the LA riots in the wake of the Rodney King verdict.

But no, this isn't a sober story about a community kept down so long until it finally rises up! It's a thriller set against the backdrop of the riots, with Ice Cube having to rescue his son, who is working at some store that is getting looted for platinum. That's really the premise. The script is by Sascha Penn, who has a couple of Starz series and spec script sales under his belt.

This is an early stages thing, so it could all fall apart, but I'm curious how people react to the idea of a thriller set against the riots, especially on the heels of, and featuring people from, Straight Outta Compton, which made the riots a moment of heartbreak in the middle of the story. I'm also curious if it'll be any good.
