Ridley Scott Says PROMETHEUS 2 Is His Next Film

Here we go again.

We've been here before. Ridley Scott aligns himself with a project (a Hot Zone miniseries, perhaps, or a sequel to Blade Runner starring Harrison Ford), and we all come running to debate whether or not it'll be any good. Someone will point out that Scott is one of our most accomplished directors - Alien will be mentioned, the original Blade Runner will get namechecked, someone else will put in a good word for Legend - and then another person will remind everyone that this is the same Ridley Scott who directed Robin Hood, Kingdom Of Heaven and G.I. Jane. This usually leads to a debate over Prometheus (what it did right, what it did wrong; how it's mostly Lindelof's fault), and just as the debate winds down, Ridley Scott will pop up to announce another new project. The previously-mentioned project may or may not come to fruition.

Today, the cycle's likely to start all over again, as Ridley Scott has announced (read: casually mentioned) that his next film will be Prometheus 2

The information comes from a recent interview with Empire Online. While discussing the post-production process on The Martian, this exchange (between Scott and Martian star Matt Damon) occurred:

They faced another challenge when the film’s release date was brought forward. But according to Damon, the typically fast-working Scott didn’t worry. “Ridley was done with the movie about two weeks after we shot!” he smiles. “I was already on to my next movie!” adds Scott. “I was starting to look for locations for my next movie, which is Prometheus 2.”

The plan has always been for Prometheus to get a sequel - at one point, we were told it'd film back-to-back with the original, which led to a lot of people using the unfortunate term "duology" - but the road to Prometheus 2 has been a bumpy one. There were script problems, scheduling issues and, most recently, rumors that Neill Blomkamp's Alien 5 was (for reasons that remain unclear) being held up by the film. Now Ridley Scott's saying it's his next project, and that information's not arriving via a press release issued by FOX, but via a throwaway line in an Empire Online interview about a completely different movie.

Is this thing happening? It seems safe to say that Prometheus 2 is going to happen at some point, and as of right now it seems that Scott intends to make it his next film. That's all we have to go on at the moment. While we're waiting to see how it plays out, feel free to hit the comments below to get the good ol' Ridley Scott discussion started up again. First person to say something nice about Legend gets a BMD no-prize.
