This week's movie, the Israeli animated documentary Waltz With Bashir, brings to The Canon a debate about what exactly defines the canon itself. What level of quality must a movie reach in order to achieve canonicity, and what kind of a meaning must a documentary have?
Ari Folman's doc examines not just his own experience in Israel's war with Lebanon, but also the very ideas of memory, both personal and national. It looks at atrocity and complicity - specifically through the eyes of a state founded on the heels of an atrocity visited upon its people. And it's told in an animated style that mixes modern and traditional techniques.
But is it Canon?
