DC Movies To Get Funny With Blue Beetle And Booster Gold

Directed by the guy behind THE FLASH.

Darkness! No parents! The DC Movieverse has thus far been a grim and unpleasant place, a place where Superman is a killer who doesn't like saving people, Aquaman is a jacked up barbarian and Batman is in every single movie they're producing. While Warner Bros has paid lip service to the idea that the DC Movieverse will be full of unique, director-driven projects so far it has looked like all the directors have the same dark, blue-tinted vision.

Until now! According to The Tracking Board a light is about to shine on the DC Movieverse, a light of comedy and fun. A buddy comedy, no less. According to the site Greg Berlanti, the guy behind Arrow and The Flash, will be directing a movie featuring Booster Gold and Blue Beetle.

For those not in the know, Booster and Beetle are buddies in the comics (well, depending on the iteration). And they're funny. They're characters who have sillier, more fun adventures (when DC isn't killing or torturing them, that is). Booster Gold is a janitor from the future who stole a time machine from the museum where he works and who came to the modern day to cash in on the superhero craze. Blue Beetle (the version I like) is Ted Kord, a a billionaire inventor who is like a sillier Tony Stark, and he also tends to be a little fat. DC killed Ted at one point and they have replaced him with a Hispanic kid named Jaime Reyes got his hands on a mystical Blue Beetle scarab; it's possible that they'll go with the Reyes version for the movie, as diversity is a big deal these days. I can't speak to the character as I never really read his title - once DC killed Ted (fucking execution style, with a gunshot to the back of the head) they really soured me on the character.

But if I were making this movie I would split the difference - make Ted Kord Hispanic and hire Michael Pena to play him.

According to Heroic Hollywood Zak Penn is being approached to write the film.

This follows up on news that Booster and Beetle were denied for Arrow and The Flash, although if Berlanti is making the movie you have to assume he would know not to ask for them. Anyway, it's great news for people like me who look at the dour landscape of DC films - this could be a breath of bright, shining air! These are great characters, and I never imagined I would see a Blue & Gold movie in my lifetime. What exciting news.
