The first trailer for Joel and Ethan Coen's Hail, Caesar! has arrived, and it's a doozy. This looks to be yet another classic Coen screwball comedy, packed to the rafters with energy and wit and one eye-popping shot after another (seriously, trying to pick one screencap as the header image for this post was nearly impossible; I hope I made the right call). I mean, just look at this thing:
As you probably noticed, the film also features what may very well be the most impressive cast the Brothers have ever assembled: Josh Brolin, Channing Tatum, Scarlett Johansson, George Clooney, Jonah Hill, Ralph Fiennes, Tilda Swinton, Frances McDormand, and Patrick Fischler (also in the cast: David Krumholtz, Clancy Brown, Christopher Lambert, and - because you demanded it - Dolph Lundgren). That's a murderer's row if I've ever seen one.
Also worth noting: the last time the Coens took on Hollywood, we got Barton Fink. This appears to be a decidedly less-terrifying affair, to be sure, but whatever: I'm just happy to see them turning their attention back to that deeply silly town. That's territory I know the Coens can nail.
Final thought: whoever cut this trailer deserves a raise: this is easily one of the year's best. If there's anything negative to say here, it's that we have to wait until next year to see the film it's advertising. Let's spend the interim taking it apart, shot-by-shot, in the comments section below. I have a feeling we'll need to watch it a dozen times before we've absorbed everything it has to offer.
