Watch ASH VS EVIL DEAD’s First Episode Online, Legally, Right Now

No Starz? No problem.

Starz' Ash vs Evil Dead debuted over the weekend, and so far the show seems to be quite a hit. Twitter exploded with fanboy praise for the show the night it premiered, and Rotten Tomatoes (which, if you hadn't heard, now indexes TV reviews) has the show putting up an impressive 97%. Yes, everyone who's seen Ash vs Evil Dead seems to enjoy it...the only problem, of course, is that not everyone has Starz.

The good news is, Starz has taken pity upon those who do not pay for its presence in their homes, and they're streaming the first episode on their site - no strings attached, no tricks up their sleeve - right this minute. The bad news is, you're probably going to have to pay for a Starz subscription to see the rest of the season. Whether or not that's worth doing will depend entirely on how you feel about the pilot.

For what it's worth: I enjoyed the first episode of Ash vs Evil Dead, but I think it's going to take some time to adjust to the idea of "Evil Dead: the TV series". For one thing, the tone of the show's much more in line with Army Of Darkness than the first two Evil Dead movies (not ideal for me, a dude who prefers the series' first two installments). For another, this is absolutely Evil Dead shot through the prism of a Starz TV series: a sprawling cast of characters is introduced, Ash's entire town is under seige (versus the single location of the first two films), there's some notable budgetary constraints to contend with...again, I enjoyed the premiere, it's just going to take some getting used to seeing this franchse in this format.

I will say, for the record, that all the Deadite stuff is outstanding, striking just the right balance between creepy and comical (it's 70/30, in case you're wodnering what the correct ratio is). And, hey, it is pretty great to see Bruce Campbell and Sam Raimi working on this property together again (more Raimi is almost never a bad thing).

Anyway, don't worry about what I think. Check out the episode for yourselves here, and use the comments below to let us know what you thought: are you digging the show so far? Wish they'd just made another movie? Reserving judgment until you've seen the series in its entirety? Think you'll order Starz in order to do so? Sound off below.
