Never has an episode of The Canon been so personal. On one side you have me, the guy who has often talked about how punk rock saved his life, going to bat for Penelope Spheeris' original rock doc The Decline of Western Civilization. On the other side you have Amy Nicholson, who truly believes - without irony - that hair metal has never received its proper respect, standing behind the sequel, The Decline of Western Civilization Part II: The Metal Years. Trapped in the middle: you.
The two docs are similar but couldn't actually be more different, and while it was hard to not just make this arguing about music (seriously, Amy thinks Poison is great) we did our best. I mean, there was some arguing over music for sure, but we also tried to talk about Spheeris and why she's important, about her filmmaking choices in the two films and about what each movie tells us about the America of its time.
But now, as always, it comes down to you. Listen to the episode and vote here.
