We’re still a month away from the end of The Flash’s winter hiatus, but the back half of season two is already looking to explore exciting territory. Just one week after the show comes back, we’ll see the return of long time Flash-nemesis Eobard Thawne as played by Matt Letchser, in the appropriately titled eleventh episode, "The Reverse-Flash Returns". That means there’s a good chance that Barry Allen, Jay Garrick, Wally West, Zoom and The Reverse-Flash will all appear in the same episode. I know I say this every few months, but I honestly can’t believe how fearlessly this show keeps drawing from DC mythology, even at the risk of overcrowding.
Eobard Thawne was likely erased from existence in the Earth-1 timeline, which means this version of the Reverse-Flash could end up being from the 25th century on Earth-2. Sorry, I need to take a second to process my excitement over just having typed that that sentence, and I can’t imagine how it must sound to someone unfamiliar with the comics and the TV show. Alternate Earths was how they managed to bring Tom Cavanagh back as the original Harrison Wells (well, not the ‘original’ original, but you know what I mean) and it’s entirely plausible that they’d do the same to bring back Letchser, whose brief stint as Thawne last season was unsettling to say the least. These are some crazy, out-there ideas, but for all I know I could be thinking small, and they might just figure out an entirely different multiverse-related way to bring him speeding back into the picture.
Big things already seem to be in store for The Flash, with the arrival of Wally at the end of the winter finale, and the possibility of Patty finding out Barry’s identity once the show returns. On top of that, writer/producter Todd Helbing had this to say about the upcoming Reverse-Flash resurgence:
“His impossible return to Central City puts a member of the S.T.A.R. Labs team in unexpected danger, forcing Barry to make a life-changing decision.”
Even when it’s off the air, this show manages to find new ways to get me excited. We’re going to be seeing a lot more of Earth-2 in the coming weeks, and at this rate, it’s only a matter of time before we run into an alternate-universe Eddie.
The Flash returns to Earth Prime on January 19th, only on The CW.
