THE GET DOWN: Netflix’s Hip Hop Show Looks Awesome

Baz Luhrmann takes on the dawn of hip hop in the Bronx.

Let's get this out of the way: The Get Down is a show about black culture that was created by two white guys, Baz Luhrmann and Shawn Ryan. It seems weird to me that this would happen in the modern world, but it did. We can talk about the problems of this after we watch this trailer:

Well, shit. Maybe it's a problem that two white guys created The Get Down but man does that trailer ever make me want to watch the show, no matter how much of a SJW I might be. It's exciting, it's emotional, and it's got just the right amount of heightened Luhrmann quality to it. I love that this vision of the Bronx in the late 70s really reminds me of my own experience in Brooklyn and Queens in the early 80s, I love the energy, I love the costumes, I love the cinematography. I LOVE the cast.

The Get Down doesn't have a premiere date yet, but it'll be out sometime in 2016. Here's hoping the show is as electric as this sizzle reel.
