Last January, we learned that Woody Allen would write and direct an original series for Amazon. Despite the fact that Allen's career started in television - and despite the fact that more and more creative types are turning to streaming services as a way to more freely flex their creative muscles - this was a surprising turn of events. Woody Allen? Working for Amazon? Huh.
Well, it's now a year later, and Deadline just dropped a few more surprising details about the still-untitled series. Namely:
Allen has set the principal cast for the six half-hour-episode series that will take place in the 1960s, and it certainly is unexpected.
Allen, who wrote the scripts and will direct, has set Elaine May and Miley Cyrus to star alongside him.
There's "unexpected", and there's "holy shit I am blindsided by this and really don't know how to feel about it". I expected many things to happen today, but I confess that Woody Allen announcing Miley Cyrus as his next co-star was not among them. My immediate reaction is...well, it's basically pictured in the image at the top of this post. But then again, who knows? Maybe Woody's onto something here.
Anyway, the reveal that this series will be set in the 60's in an interesting one, and I'm also happy to see Woody working with Elaine May again. But, really, I need to wrap my head around the Miley Cyrus portion of this reveal before I can fully appreciate those developments.
