Let The New MIDNIGHT SPECIAL Trailer Shine Its Light On You

Jeff Nichols' latest looks fantastic.

Speaking as both a confirmed fan of Jeff Nichols and a confirmed mega-fan of Michael Shannon, I could not be more excited about Midnight Special, which arrives in just over a month. Everything about this movie looks great, and the early response (from those lucky enough to have seen it) has been almost universally positive

What is Midnight Special? Honestly, I've gone out of my way to avoid learning too much about it, but based on the trailers, it appears that Nichols is channeling Close Encounters-era Spielberg by way of the down-home folksiness that's played such a big role in his previous directorial efforts (Take Shelter, Mud). You better believe I'm all in for some of that.

Today we got a new trailer, and it's probably the best one yet.

Here's the plot description, via press release:

In the sci-fi thriller Midnight Special, writer/director Jeff Nichols proves again that he is one of the most compelling storytellers of our time, as a father (Michael Shannon), goes on the run to protect his young son, Alton (Jaeden Lieberher), and uncover the truth behind the boy’s special powers.

What starts as a race from religious extremists and local law enforcement quickly escalates to a nationwide manhunt involving the highest levels of the Federal Government. Ultimately his father risks everything to protect Alton and help fulfill a destiny that could change the world forever, in this genre–defying film as supernatural as it is intimately human.

All of that sounds right up my alley, the footage looks great, and the cast is fantastic. Cannot wait to see this when it opens on March 18th.
