According to Deadline, One Direction's Harry Styles has been offered a role in Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk, a World War II film which has already signed Tom Hardy, Mark Rylance, and Kenneth Branagh.
Nolan. Hardy. Rylance. Branagh. Styles.
Word on the street is that the role will not be a leading one - the clear implication is that Styles would have a bit part to play, or perhaps a supporting role - but one has to wonder how this particular pairing came about. Normally, the cynic in me would say that the studio was forcing the role on its director in an effort to goose box office sales ("It's a big, serious, enormously expensive World War II movie...let's get a pop star in there to bring in the tweens on opening weekend"), but Nolan has all of the clout over at Warner Bros., so that seems highly unlikely.
Can Harry Styles act? I should point out that, outside of his being a celebrity, I know literally nothing about the guy (or One Direction, for that matter; I'm almost certain I've never even heard one of their songs), so maybe this isn't as strange as it seems.
UPDATE: Variety has confirmed that Harry Styles will star in Dunkirk. Here's their update:
One Direction singer Harry Styles and Fionn Whitehead will star in Christopher Nolan’s World War II action-drama Dunkirk.
Warner Bros. had no comment on the offer for the film, which centers on the British military evacuation of the French city of Dunkirk in 1940. Styles and Whitehead are joining Tom Hardy, Mark Rylance and Kenneth Branagh. The film marks Styles’ feature film debut.
Welp, the news has been teed up. Please take your best swings at it in the comments below.
