Thrillist has a great interview with The Nice Guys’ Shane Black right now that covers a lot of interesting territory (some of which Scott covered here). Some of that territory involves the Doc Savage film Black has been developing for a while:
Doc Savage is sort of in the ether now. We're hoping to make it sometime next year. I would very much like to do Doc with a fellow named Dwayne Johnson if we can make that work. I made a decision that Dwayne is the guy. It's on the back burner while he's busy.
This is fun, though it doesn’t really tell us much. Black hopes to make the film next year. He also hopes to get the incredibly busy Dwayne Johnson in the lead role. That’d be great if both of those things happen, but until we get official announcements, it’s all up in the air.
I hope both these things come to pass, though. The Rock would make a good Doc Savage, a genius muscleman who can do pretty much anything, kind of a roided-out, super manly Buckaroo Banzai (truthfully, Banzai is more of a skinny, somewhat less-manly Doc Savage). And Shane Black would probably make a good Doc Savage film. Put them both together, and you're going to have something special.
