In A Shocking Turn Of Events, Mark Rylance Is Joining Steven Spielberg’s READY PLAYER ONE

Literally everyone saw this coming.

It seems like just yesterday that we were talking about the ongoing bromance between Steven Spielberg and Mark Rylance. It was yesterday.

That's when we found out that Rylance has signed up for Spielberg's The Kidnapping Of Edgardo Mortara, a religious drama expected to shoot sometime next year. This was the third straight collaboration between Spielberg and Rylance (RyBerg?), following Bridge Of Spies and this summer's The BFG

Well, guess what's happening today?

Mark Rylance is in final negotiations to co-star in Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi film Ready Player One...

Rylance will play James Donovan Halliday, the creator of OASIS, an enigmatic figure with shades of Howard Hughes and Steve Jobs.

Ready Player One fans will remember James Donovan Halliday as the Willy Wonka-like creator of the virtual reality simulation (the OASIS) that much of Ready Player One takes place in. He is, as the Hollywood Reporter notes in the quote above, an enigmatic figure, one who looms over the entire narrative of Ernie Cline's book. Rylance, an enormously gifted actor who I suspect would be able to play virtually any role thrown at him, will probably crush this gig.

Anyway, this will mark the fourth straight collaboration between Spielberg and Rylance. I hope to one day see the two of them battle Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese in a bro-fight.

Ready Player One arrives in 2017.
