This week The Canon gets a little personal as we talk about Billy Wilder's 1945 classic problem picture, The Lost Weekend. A multiple Oscar-earner (including Best Picture and Best Actor for lead Ray Milland), The Lost Weekend tells the story of three days in the life of drunk writer Don Birnham as he tries to sober up and battle his personal demons. This led me to talking about some of my family and personal history with alcohol, and also to confess the way I troll patrons at the bar with the jukebox.
The Lost Weekend is harrowing but also entertaining, the kind of one-two punch only Billy Wilder could truly pull off. He's one of my favorite filmmakers of all time, and I look forward to talking about a whole bunch more of his movies on The Canon in the future.
In the meantime, go here to vote on whether or not The Lost Weekend is Canon-worthy!
Next week we travel to India for Pather Panchali, the first film in the Apu trilogy!
