Prince is gone. He was 57, which is a horribly early age to die. At the same time, it feels like he’s always been there, and many of you in fact do not know a world without Prince in it. Purple Rain came out when I was in 8th grade, and though I didn’t have the musical wherewithal to understand what was happening it was very clear that Prince was a sea-change in pop music. He was not “the next” anyone, or “this generation’s” anything. He was new. He was original. He was Prince.
We don’t have all the info about his death yet, and after much backroom discussion, we definitely don’t know what to say about this right now. But one thing a death like this throws into sharp relief is that those details kind of don’t matter. More words will be coming, but for now we wanted to give our readers a place to talk about Prince and what he meant to them.
