As you all know, yesterday was Alien Day, and oh, what a time we had. There were specialty screenings at the Drafthouse, a clusterfuck of epic proportions sponsored by Reebok, liquid-filled records being sold by the good folks at Mondo...all in all, Alien Day was good times.
Amidst all that excitement, however, something managed to slip right under our radar: the first-ever photo from Ridley Scott's Alien: Covenant. The image, which you can see below, was posted to the official Alien Facebook page, and shows off one of the patches worn by the crew members of the titular ship.
Check it out.
The image appeared alongside the title treatment at the top of this post. Admittedly, none of this is particularly exciting (it's a photo of a patch - that may or may not be a Raiders nod; you make the call - plus two words against a greenish-black backdrop) but I gotta admit: for the longest time, I was convinced that Ridley Scott's Prometheus sequel would never happen. Speaking as something of a Prometheus apologist, I'm actually quite interested to see what the dude has planned.
The cast alone (which does not include Noomi Rapace, but does include Billy Crudup, Amy Seimetz, Demián Bichir, Michael Fassbender, and Danny Fucking McBride) is enough to have me onboard, but the official synopsis has me curious, as well:
Ridley Scott returns to the universe he created in Alien with Alien: Covenant, the second chapter in a prequel trilogy that began with Prometheus — and connects directly to Scott’s 1979 seminal work of science fiction. Bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, the crew of the colony ship Covenant discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world — whose sole inhabitant is the “synthetic” David (Michael Fassbender), survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition.”
So, right off the bat, my guess is that Noomi Rapace actually is in this movie, and has probably been squirreled away somewhere on Planet Paradise by David the Kooky Android. I would also like to put $10 on that planet harboring a number of grotesque secrets, at least some of which David will turn out to be directly responsible for.
Guess we're gonna find out! Alien: Covenant arrives next August.
