It’s Official: Jon Bernthal’s PUNISHER Is Getting His Very Own Netflix Series

We all saw this coming. Even Phil.

The inevitable occurred this morning: Entertainment Weekly has confirmed that Jon Bernthal's Punisher is getting his own Netflix series.

Here's the news:

EW has learned that Marvel has ordered a (Punisher) spin-off starring the viglante character introduced in Daredevil season 2.

Jon Bernthal will reprise his role as vengeful military veteran Frank Castle, who brings his own lethal form of justice to Hell’s Kitchen. Writer and executive producer Steve Lightfoot (HannibalCasualty) will serve as showrunner.

As of this writing, neither Marvel nor Netflix have confirmed EW's, uh, confirmation, but according to them we should expect an announcement later today.

Here's my take: I'm happy about this announcement, but I've also got reservations. Bernthal (who should've killed Rick Grimes' crybaby ass on The Walking Dead) is one of my favorite working actors, and lord knows he was the best thing about Daredevil S2. If he's there, I'll probably show up.

But on the other hand, I'm not entirely convinced The Punisher is a character who can headline a series, much less one comprised of Netflix's extended seasons (seriously, guys, cut down on the number of episodes). The character strikes me as someone who's better in small doses - popping up as antagonist or ally, as needed - rather than the headlining act. But dat Bernthal, tho.

What do you guys think?
