I’m a big Star Trek fan, but I don’t think we’ve seen a for real Star Trek movie from this new crew yet. The first, really good, movie had a lot of narrative work to do and got by on charisma. The second movie is just garbage. So that leaves this third movie, co-written by Simon Pegg and directed by Justin Lin - both old school Trek fans - to finally deliver the new Star Trek movie we deserve.
This trailer goes a long way toward making that dream a reality:
I hope this movie does well because it seem the whole point of it is geared toward letting this new crew finally get comfortable in their own skin, having a little adventure like you might see on the original series. Sure, there’s a lot of crazy nonsense going on and the Enterprise apparently gets destroyed again, but this feels refreshingly low-stakes. That’s exactly what I want from the series at this point.
Let’s all keep our fingers crossed. This feels small, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to be bad. Hopefully Star Trek Beyond is just what the doctor ordered after the abysmal last film. At this point, I just want a legit Star Trek adventure. It looks like this could be it.
