John Boyega Joins PACIFIC RIM 2 As Idris Elba’s Son

That’s a kaiju bruv, believe it.

After setting the screen on fire in Attack The Block (and providing some stellar dramatic work in Half of a Yellow Sun), John Boyega took the lead in the new Star Wars trilogy, catapulting himself to superstardom. Now, it looks like he’s going to get to do something even cooler: he’s going to play Idris Elba Jr.

Okay, giant robots cancelling the apocalypse by punching aliens is pretty cool too.

After being on-again and off-again more times than Ross & Rachel, the Pacific Rim sequel is finally gearing up to go, with Steven DeKnight in the director’s chair and Guillermo del Toro taking a producing role, Deadline reports. That’s pretty much all we know right now, although original writer Travis Beacham did mention something about a Kaiju/Jaeger hybrid at one point. Beacham doesn’t seem to be involved anymore, and there’s been no word on either Rinko Kikuchi or Charlie Hunnam, though it’s hard to imagine we’ve seen the last of Mako Mori.

What’s more, with Boyega playing Stacker Pentecost Jr., there’s plenty of potential for sibling rivalry with Mako! Maybe they’ll drift and pilot the coolest robot ever. Maybe the robot will look like Idris Elba. Maybe I’m getting carried away, all I know is Pacific Rim was fun to the nth degree, and an action movie ripe for the era of globalism, so I can’t wait to see what Boyega brings to the table. Heck, I’m even excited for behind the scenes footage of him stomping around in a giant head.

Pacific Rim 2 goes into production at the end of this year, and will probably come out some time after that.
