The First Trailer For OTHER PEOPLE Wages A Comic Battle Against Cancer

Sundance hype is strong for this one.

Here we have the first trailer for Chris Kelly's Other People, a cancer dramedy which screened to largely-positive reviews at this year's Sundance Film Festival (there have, in fact, been Oscar rumblings).

It looks...well, it looks like it might be a rough sit.

See what I mean?

This is Kelly's first film (he wrote and directed), and word on the street is that he knocked it out of the park. That's not hard to imagine given this cast, which includes Jesse Plemmons, Molly Shannon, Bradley Whitford, Zach Woods (who I'd like to point out is one of the greatest MVPs in comedy today), Paul Dooley and June Squibb.

Here's the Sundance plot synopsis:

David, a struggling comedy writer fresh off from breaking up with his boyfriend, moves from New York City to Sacramento to help his sick mother. Living with his conservative father and much-younger sisters for the first time in ten years, he feels like a stranger in his childhood home. As his mother’s health declines, David frantically tries to extract meaning from this horrible experience and convince everyone (including himself) that he’s “doing okay.”

I expect Other People to provoke tears and laughter in equal measure, and if it can avoid coming across as awards-bait in the process, we might be in for something special.

Other People opens on September 9th. You interested in it or nah?
