We take for granted that the really big overseas movies will hit American theaters, particularly something as well known as Godzilla, but that’s hardly been the case with this series. With that in mind, Godzilla: Resurgence’s lack of an American distributor or release date has been making me a little nervous.
But I shouldn’t have been. Today Funimation announced that they have acquired the North American rights to distribute Godzilla: Resurgence. The film will hit theaters. Whether it hits enough theaters for you to see the biggest Godzilla ever stomp buildings on a giant screen remains to be seen. I recommend moving to New York or L.A. now just to be on the safe side.
There isn’t a solid release date for this yet, but the film is expected to come out late this year, so probably around November or December. That’s going to be a long wait, but it does put the film in a great position for Oscar consideration.
