It’s an interesting time for cord-cutters like me, people who opt to subscribe to their entertainment outlets piecemeal instead of getting a cable package. Most of these we gladly pay for. Hulu, however, was the one we took for granted as free (unless you wanted Hulu+ or Hulu without commercials, that is).
Well not anymore. Hulu VP and head of experience Ben Smith has issued an announcement claiming your free ride is over, Hippies! (via Variety)
“For the past couple years, we’ve been focused on building a subscription service that provides the deepest, most personalized content experience possible to our viewers,” Hulu senior VP and head of experience Ben Smith said in a statement. “As we have continued to enhance that offering with new originals, exclusive acquisitions, and movies, the free service became very limited and no longer aligned with the Hulu experience or content strategy.”
This will come to pass in the next couple weeks. After that, if you want to watch some Hulu, you’ll have to pay $7.99 a month. If you want to watch it sans the same one goddamn commercial that crashes your browser over and over again, you’ll have to pay $11.99. If you want to watch Hulu without commercials but with a professional cuddler, that price will fluctuate with the market.
Many already pay for Hulu+, so this won’t affect them much. The rest of you losers, on the other hand, will have to start paying the piper for your episodes of New Girl very soon.
