I would like to think that we, as a nation, can come together in these divisive times under one simple truth: Jared Leto sucks and his Joker is the worst one yet committed to film. The version of The Joker in Suicide Squad is exactly what someone who misunderstands the character would do with him. He's a pimp and a Scarface-like crime boss first and foremost, which is wrong for the Clown Prince of Crime. He's got tattoos, which makes no sense for an agent of chaos who is changeable from day to day. And he's slimy and gross - not in the grubby way Heath Ledger was, but in a way that indicates the Joker makes his own gravy when you put him in water.
There was, at one point, more of this irritating Joker in Suicide Squad - an early cut had him, burned after his helicopter crash, confront the Skwad during the final battle with Enchantress - but we eventually got saved and only about seven minutes of him made it into the final film. And those seven minutes are, if we're being honest, fairly extraneous. You could cut that stuff out without harming the movie at all.
By the way, how much more irritating must Leto have been if WB's solution was to give us less of the most recognizable character in the movie? Well, Leto doesn't think it was his fault. When talking about all his delete scenes he had this to say:
“I think that I brought so much to the table in every scene, it was probably more about filtering all of the insanity. Because I wanted to give a lot of options, and I think there’s probably enough footage in this film for a Joker movie… If I were to die tomorrow, maybe the studio would roll something out. Rated R or rated X performance in there somewhere.”
An X-rated performance? I've heard some stories about this cast being wild on set, but not that wild. I'm honestly not sure I could stomach an X-rated Joker, and I'm also not sure what that even means. Suicide Squad was always PG-13, after all. This was never an R-rated movie. So what could Leto have been doing that was X-rated? Maybe there's a scene that's a companion to the deleted scene wherein it's revealed that Slipknot, the immediately dead member of the Squad, is a serial rapist.
Yes, one of the villains was originally portrayed as a serial rapist. I know we complain about studio interference, but if it got us less Leto and no raping supervillains maybe it was okay this time?
Last thing: Leto doesn't know if he'll come back as The Joker. He must have signed a multiple picture deal - it's just standard - but he's unsure of his own future.
“It feels like there could be more to come… I think it entirely depends on the response of the public. If they respond to this Joker, I could imagine The Joker coming back, but if they don’t I certainly wouldn’t want to overstay my welcome.”
Please, don't overstay your welcome on our account.
