What happened to the colonists who suddenly vanished from Roanoke Island? Was there more than one shooter involved in the assassination of JFK? What happens to us after we die? Why does Jared Leto's Joker have that dipshit "Damaged" tattoo on his forehead?
These are the greatest mysteries of our time. But as of today, we can consider the case officially closed on one of them: in a new interview with Empire, Suicide Squad director David Ayer has revealed that
there is, in fact, nothing awaiting us after death, and that life itself is a cruel joke perpetrated by a petty and insane God the backstory of Jared Leto's forehead tattoo.
“This is sort of my personal thing and maybe less about a larger connection. But Joker killed Robin and Batman basically smashes his teeth out and locks him up in Arkham Asylum. It’s in the asylum where Joker would have done the ‘damaged’ tattoo as a message to Batman saying, ‘You’ve damaged me. I was so beautiful before and now you’ve destroyed my face.’ That’s where the grill comes from."
Maybe I'm imagining this, but I seem to recall hearing this thing about the Joker's grill ages ago. Something about the image of Ben Affleck, in full Batman regalia, repeatedly punching Jared Leto's Joker square in the mouth, shattering his teeth and leaving him a crumpled, sobbing mess on the floor really stuck with me for some reason (no idea why). This thing about the tattoo, though: that's news to me. I must admit the explanation is just as basic as I'd hoped.
