First: the news, via Deadline:
Idris Elba is stepping into the ring. The actor and producer is buffing up for Idris Elba: Fighter, a limited series that...will see Elba undertake the physically and mentally demanding task of training to become a professional kickboxer, ultimately competing against a seasoned brawler in a no-holds-barred bout.
Yes, you read that correctly: Idris Elba has signed on to star in a three-part docuseries in which he will be trained to mercilessly kick people in the head. Why? Because (Idris Elba crashes through the nearest wall, Kool-Aid Man-style, and bicycle kicks you in the face). That's why.
The series, filmed on location in the UK, Cuba, Japan, Thailand and South Africa, will air on the Discovery Network sometime next year (in both the UK and the States), and seems to exist primarily because Discovery understands that watching Idris Elba kick people in the face is something that many, many people will happily tune in for.
Here's Elba saying something typically badass about the series:
“It has been a lifelong ambition of mine to fight professionally. Entering the ring to further test myself as a human being is a challenge I have been looking to take on for quite some time.”
What a goddamn boss. Deadline goes on to say that Idris Elba: Fighter will find the star pushing himself to his very limit "to overcome pain and fear", and that he'll be trained by former world champions, coaches, and various other folks who have devoted their lives to the art of spin-kicking chumps in their skulls.
Nothing else to report at this time, but we will keep you updated on Idris Elba's ongoing face-kicking training.
