Poor Christoph Waltz, an amazing actor who only gets to be amazing in Quentin Tarantino movies. While having two absolutely show-stopping roles in a career is far more than most actors can boast, it’s just as sad to see such a unique talent so misused.
Who can say if Robert Rodriguez has what it takes to give Waltz the kind of role he needs to shine? That’s not a rhetorical question, and the answer is “lots of people”. Nevertheless, The Hollywood Reporter claims Waltz is in talks to take a major role in Rodriguez’s upcoming adaptation of Alita: Battle Angel.
The Alita story involves a female robot found by a scientist and turned into some kind of anime badass. Should Waltz get the role, he would play that scientist. Rosa Salazar is playing the anime badass. No word yet on who will play her underwear.
If nothing else, at least Waltz won’t be playing another rote villain in this. Maybe there will be enough warmth in the character to bring out some of that classic Christoph Waltz charm. Here’s hoping. But not too hard.
Alita: Battle Angel is expected to arrive July 2018.
