Here, at last, is the first trailer for Stephen Gaghan's Gold, starring Bryce Dallas Howard, Edgar Ramirez, Corey Stoll, comedy MVP Timothy Simons, and a borderline-unrecognizable Matthew McConaughey (who packed on 40 pounds and did something horrific to his hair for the role). It looks fantastic.
Gaghan, whose last feature film (as a director) was 2005's Syriana, seems to be having a blast here, as does his impressive cast. When I say this movie looks Scorsese af, please know that I say so in the most complimentary way possible.
Based on a true story, Gold tells the story of Kenny Wells, a full-time dreamer and all-around scumbag who stumbles into the jungles of Borneo and finds himself sitting atop the biggest gold find in history. Along for the ride are a geologist (Ramirez), his put-upon wife (Howard), and what I imagine will be a number of shady hangers-on.
McConaughey clearly seems to be having a ball with this character. He also clearly seems to be chasing another Oscar. If Gaghan's final product lives up to this trailer, I dunno, maybe we should give it to him.
Gold opens on Christmas Day. What do you guys think? Into it?
