As you've certainly heard by now, Ghost Rider is headed to ABC's Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. this season...but it's not the Johnny Blaze version of the character you might remember from Nic Cage's dual pair of Ghost Rider films.
This is the All-New Ghost Rider version of Ghost Rider, a character by the name of Robbie Reyes (played by Gabriel Luna). Whereas Johnny Blaze was a motorcycle stuntman cursed with powers by Satan himself, Reyes is a Latino high school student who gets reborn as the Spirit of Vengeance after getting gunned down during a Los Angeles street race. Also, he drives a souped-up car with flaming wheels instead of a motorcycle.
Sure, okay. Let's take a look.
Let's take a look at this new teaser.
Alright, well, here's head of Marvel Television Jeph Loeb with some thoughts on the character:
Robbie’s story, in its inception, is the story of an older brother who’s looking after his younger brother, and then how the world of the Ghost Rider changes that dynamic. That’s true of any Marvel hero. We begin in a place where it’s something we can all relate to, and then something extraordinary happens to them, not that they’ve ever asked for it. What we’ll find out along the way is Robbie’s journey now that he has the burden of being the Ghost Rider, what that does and more importantly how that affects our cast at S.H.I.E.L.D.
I'd be curious to know why they went with this new version of the character for Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D., but not so curious that I'd actually put the time into investigating that. My guess is there's a rights thing going on here (maybe Columbia Pictures is still holding onto the character?), but then again, maybe they're just looking to change things up a bit. Or maybe both Johnny Blaze Ghost Rider movies were flaming dumpster fires and they'd like to avoid reminding people of that. I don't know!
In any event, you can see the new Ghost Rider in the Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. season premiere, which will arrive on September 20th.
